In October 2014, thanks to your support, our rescue team recovered a group of children who were being forced to work in hazardous conditions on Lake Volta… some for years. They were brought back to our 65-bed shelter for rehabilitation and during their interviews, several kids came forward to provide details about their brothers, sisters, and friends still on the lake. Many of them were being subjected to the same (or worse) abuses and were separated from their siblings.
The information provided by the children made the rescue operation much easier for our field team. The kids were able to provide exact locations, nicknames (many children are given other names when they are trafficked), and up-to-date physical descriptions of their friends. Parents often come to Challenging Heights for help recovering their children but rarely know their exact location or even their physical appearance, as years have passed since they last saw them.
The details provided by the rescued children were invaluable.
Our team used these accounts to immediately start the planning process; following a thorough investigation, we recovered more than 20 children just in time for Christmas!
The kids were able to reunite with their friends and siblings in a safe environment at the shelter, while receiving care and lots of time for play. For some, it had been years since they were separated from one another, so there were many long-awaited, joyous reunions and they're excited to complete their rehabilitation process and family reintegration… together.
These young freedom fighters have proved that they will not be passive, but actively rescue others.
Thanks for believing in them.
